How to Control Oily Skin

How to Control Oily Skin
07/08/2018 Timeless Skin Care Europe

If you struggle with constantly shiny skin that feels like an oil slick, don’t worry – you’re not alone. Oily skin is an incredibly common, yet misunderstood and sometimes frustrating skin type to have. But you don’t need to fight your skin – you can control oily skin by understanding what your skin really needs and how to treat it.

Don’t strip your skin

Having oily skin makes it tempting to use incredibly harsh, stripping cleansers that leave your skin squeaky-clean and oil free – but this is a HUGE mistake and can damage your skin in the long run. Such cleansers ALL moisture and hydration from oily skin, dehydrating it and breaking down the skin’s natural protective moisture barrier, allowing for skin to become irritated and break out easily. Treat your skin gently and use a non-comedogenic, non-foaming cleanser that gently removes excess oil without irritating skin.

Use lightweight hydrators and moisturisers

Just because your skin is oily, doesn’t mean that you can skip moisturiser. It still needs a balance of water-based hydration and oil-based moisture. It’s important to choose lightweight textures to avoid weighing your skin down – our lightweight Hyaluronic Acid and B5 Serum are perfect for this. Another lightweight moisturiser that’s perfect for oily skin is Squalane Oil – it sounds oxymoronic, but this weightless oil penetrates the skin without adding any greasiness, making it ideal for nourishing oily skin.

Use a clay mask once a week

Clay masks are incredibly helpful for managing oily skin because they absorb excess oils from skin, refining large pores and leaving skin matte and fresh. Most clay masks are made of Kaolin Clay, a super effective, oil absorbing clay. Because they can be a strong treatment, they’re best used once a week to help naturally manage oily skin, without compromising or irritating it.

Use a BHA product

BHA, also known as Beta Hydroxy Acid, is a type of exfoliator that is oil soluble – perfect for oily skin. It penetrates pores, dissolving blackheads and regulating sebum production. Many toners are made with BHA specifically to help manage oily skin. Depending on the percentage of BHA, they can be used every day to help shrink pores, get rid of breakouts, and mattify skin. They’re amazing for controlling oily skin completely naturally.
